For those who don’t know, Phuket Old Town, a stunning blend of Sino-colonial heritage, culture and architecture, is where it all began. For centuries the island’s strategic location to the south of Thailand made it an important port of call on the trading routes between India and East Asia. Drawn to its rich natural resources, it played host to Dutch, British, Portuguese, French, Arab and Indian merchants painting it with a fascinating mix of cultural influences. When tin became a valuable commodity in the 19th Century, the Chinese arrived to stake their fortunes on the tin mining industry. With the fortunes made from mining, they built magnificent Sino-colonial mansions, multi-level shophouses and brightly-hued Taoist temples in what is now known as Phuket Old Town. They also married into the local community, giving birth to the “Baba” (Peranakan) culture. From the culture to the cuisine and architecture, this unique heritage is still visible in Phuket Town, an extraordinary chronicle of the island’s colourful history.
In recent years the Phuket Town has undergone a renaissance to restore it old world charm. The century-old shophouses that line many of the streets have been refurbished and repurposed as boutique guesthouses, artisan coffee shops, tiny art galleries showcasing local talent, craft refreshment bars with live music, and restaurants that celebrate the true. A local initiative also turned the town into an open-air gallery for giant murals, with local artists and some of the country’s most famous street artists adding a dash of colour to street corners, restaurant walls and shop facades.
Blending contemporary design, luxurious comfort and Thai charm, the Novotel Phuket City Phokeethra offers intrepid travelers the opportunity to experience the real Phuket City, one beyond the beaches. Designated a “City of Gastronomy” by UNESCO, foodies can enjoy delicious street food authentic Phuket, Hokkien and Thai cuisine at the local market next door to the hotel. Or embark on an extraordinary culinary adventure at nearby restaurants such as Tu Kab Khao, Dibuka, Blue Elephant, Raya Restaurant, Go Benz Rice Porridge Phuket and many more. The Dibuk, Thalang, Romanee, Yaowarat, Phang-Nga and Krabi roads that make up historical heart of the town offer a glimpse into Phuket’s fascinating past and are bustling with boutiques and fabric shops, coffee shops, bars and restaurant, and much more.
