Phuket Town Night Market
31 October 2019

❊ Does Phuket have a walking street?

❊ Where is Phuket Town Night Market?

❊ What time does Phuket night market start?

Don’t worry we have the answers!

Phuket Town Night Market is also known as Phuket Walking Street, and in the Southern Thai dialect as Lard Yai, which means “big market.”

This weekly market, held every Sunday, is held on the beautifully renovated Thalang Road, right in the middle of the historic Sino-Portuguese district of Phuket old Town, lined by Chinese, Thai Muslim and Indian shops and restaurants.

Night Market Phuket Town can be reached on foot from Novotel Phuket Phokeeethra but it is probably best to take a taxi or a tuk-tuk, especially for families with young children, and this is very much a family-oriented market with toy stalls alongside the handicraft and clothing stalls, and even a free-to-use trampoline for the youngsters to bounce around and have a good time.

A beautiful wooden Chinese gate has been installed at the entrance to Night Market Phuket Town, with LARD YAI written in Thai, Chinese and English. Although this has always been a central hub of commerce, when Thalang became a walking street a few years ago, the Phuket authorities restored the house facades and added colour-changing lights so the buildings change through a spectrum of red, blue, green and magenta.

The shops during the week sell all kinds of everyday items, and many of them are very old businesses: the oldest drugstore in Phuket is located here. Late on Sunday afternoon, Phuket Night Market Walking Street takes on an even more lively appearance, as the vendor stalls are set up and the crowds begin to arrive.

This is an ideal place to go shopping for handicrafts and souvenirs, with locally made clothing an especial favourite for everyone to take home. Children’s size clothing and shoes is readily available. Also popular is locally made jewelry.

At some point during the evening, you are going to find that you are hungry. Don’t worry – there is plenty of choice from the food stalls and the little local restaurants. Everything is available at Night Market Phuket Town, from burgers and ice cream through to the distinctive Thai, Chinese, Muslim and Indian foods that make Phuket cuisine so fascinating to explore.

Opening Hours: Sunday 16:00 – 22:00
