Wedding in Phuket Old Town by Novotel Phuket Phokeethra

At the heart of Phuket Old Town is Novotel Phuket Phokeethra, one of the island’s leading wedding venues because of its state-of-the-art facilities, spacious function rooms, and modern guestrooms and suites.

The hotel has its own professional events team including wedding ceremony planners, and can arrange a wedding party in Thai, Chinese, Indian and Western style, and also a Peranakan wedding for the island’s Baba Yaya community.

A selection of Phuket wedding packages are always available, and for special deals and offers on wedding ceremony and honeymoon packages, planners can visit the hotel website.

A traditional Thai wedding ceremony involves many distinct customs, beginning with choosing an auspicious date to ensure a successful marriage and delivering the wedding invitations. The Buddhist wedding ceremony itself always begins at 9:09 as Thai people consider the number nine to be a lucky number. Similarly, during the religious ceremonies that take place before the wedding ceremony itself, nine monks are invited to bless the couple.

During the actual wedding ceremony, the day begins with the Khan Maak procession where the groom leads his family and friends to the bride’s family, traditionally with singing and long-drum music.

The groom is confronted by “gates” made from strings of gold held by the bride’s family members and bridesmaids, and then must pay money, answer questions, or perform tasks in order to “unlock” each gate, symbolizing his patience and desire to meet his future wife.

Once the exchange is completed, the bride and groom take part in the Sai Monkhon ceremony wherein the couple sit next to each other, and are each given a headpiece joined by a piece of cotton that represents a bond they will share for the rest of their lives.

The wedding party guests are then invited to a reception that involves dinner, drinks and dancing so that the newly joined families have an opportunity to get to know each other in a celebratory Phuket wedding setting.

At Novotel Phuket Phokeethra, guests can choose from a selection of carefully curated Thai wedding party packages that will include the arrangements for the nine monks, the ceremonial necessities, the decoration of the wedding venues, and of course the full catering arrangements including the traditional cake.

A Peranakan wedding is different in style to a Thai ceremony, and is a very distinct style of Phuket wedding.

The Peranakan, or Straits Chinese people, are also known in Phuket as Baba Yaya: “Baba” for the men, and “Yaya” for the women. They are the descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to the island seeking a new and better life by working in tin mines back in the 19th century.

The Baba Yaya, in addition to individual wedding ceremonies, also hold an annual mass Phuket wedding festival that upholds the memories of the tin mining industry.

For a traditional Peranakan wedding, on the big day itself, while the groom is looking smart in a white suit the bride will wear a striking traditional Chinese costume, with special hairdo, vintage jewellery and accessories.

A Peranakan wedding will include a wedding tea ceremony, in which the newlyweds will kneel in front of the groom’s parents while offering tea to them. Then they will offer tea to other members of his family by order of age, meaning from the grandparents and uncles, aunties to his older siblings.

There is a large Baba Yaya community in Phuket Old Town, and Novotel Phuket Phokeethra is a popular venue for a Peranakan wedding.

The wedding ceremony facilities and wedding venues at Novotel Phuket Phokeethra offer everything for aspectacular Phuket wedding down to a more intimately scaled wedding party.

The 935sqm Grand Ballroom complete with vaulted ceilings and state-of-the-art amenities is one of the biggest wedding venues on the eastern side of the island and can accommodate up to 700 guests for a Phuket wedding.

Novotel Phuket Phokeethra also offers two multi-purpose wedding venues that are each approximately500sqm in area, ideal for a smaller wedding party. For more intimate wedding venues, and for events and ceremonies outside of the main Phuket wedding ceremony, there are four function rooms that range from 54sqm to 235sqm in size.

For easy access for wedding party guests Novotel Phuket Phokeethra offers complimentary car parking areas.

The hotel’s wedding party planners will advise on the style of decoration for the wedding venues and on the food for the banquet, with a range of options including traditional Phuket food. Other than the wedding venues, wedding party guests can dine at any of the three restaurants and bars at Novotel Phuket Phokeethra.

Amor is the all-day restaurant for cuisines ranging from local to international, served in either a la carte or buffet style. Lua Lobby Bar is a contemporary venue for evening cocktails with music. Estrela Sky Lounge on top of the Novotel Phuket Phokeethra is a particularly popular spot for Phuket wedding party guests, with its dramatic views across the Old Town and the sea, and the cocktails, wine and light bites served, with a gentle musical accompaniment.

The Phuket wedding couple and guests wishing to stay at Novotel Phuket Phokeethra will enjoy the stylish guestrooms with their views of the ocean, the mountains, and the rooftops of Phuket Old Town, with five room categories ranged over 18 floors.
